The Quality Assurance Laboratories (QASL) was established as a sister concern of Quality Assurance (QAS - India) in the year 1999. Well qualified and skilled food technologists and microbiologists headed by a well experienced Ph.D. hand, carry out all Chemical, Microbiological and Physical analysis in this lab- making it now the only laboratory in the private sector, exclusively intended for cashew exports in India. QASL has the latest testing facilities for detecting the presence of all organic and inorganic contaminants in cashew consignments. We follow the AOAC International testing procedures as well as test methods approved by AFI for the analysis. These tests are well documented. In recognition of the splendid performance, Quality Assurance Laboratories was accredited by RINA (ITALY) in 2003, as an ISO 9001-2000 certified lab. As a part of our Quality Policy, we are constantly updating our testing procedures, and we are committed to give accurate and precise test results within the shortest time limits. We are also a member of the AOAC International (Association of Official Analytical Chemists-USA) and our membership no. is 84327. We hope to undertake the quality analysis of Ayurvedic medicinal preparations like arishta, asava, choorna, khritham and the like. Analysis of agricultural products like Pepper, Cardamom, Cloves etc., processed food products like jams, squash, edible oil, edible flours, milk, drinking water and soap (both toilet & laundry) is also undertaken. The Government of Kerala has approved Quality Assurance Laboratories in March 2006 as a Government approved lab. for carrying out the analysis of drugs and cosmetics. As per the request of the manufacturers, we have started analyzing drugs, raw materials and finished products as well as cosmetics. We have a team of qualified Pharmacist, Chemists and Microbiologists who carry out the tests efficiently and accurately. We have purchased and installed a High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) unit that can detect and estimate contaminants in the nanogram scale. In addition to this, we have a Gas Chromatograph (GC) which can detect the pesticide residues present in agricultural products, a UV/VIS Spectrophotometer, Karl Fischer Moisture Titrimeter, Tablet Dissolution and Disintegration Apparatus, Digital Potentiometer etc. AS a part of the B.Sc & M.Sc curriculum, a student is expected to submit a report of a project work of 2 months duration done by him/her in an approved laboratory, under the guidance of a qualified research guide. During 2004-05, 5 under graduate and 7 post graduate students have completed their project work in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Microbiology, in this lab. During 2005-06, 35 M.Sc. students and in the year 2006-07, 108 B.Sc and M.Sc students from different colleges under Kerala and Mahatma Gandhi Universities have completed their project work in this lab. We expect a good number of students next year to avail of this opportunity. We also conduct training programmes for those who wish to become fully qualified analysts under the efficient guidance of our scientists & laboratory staff. The lab always tries to achieve efficiency and accuracy through continual improvement of the procedures and processes. Our staff also undergo regular training programmes to update their knowledge and skills. |
